    HOW LONG DID IT ACTUALLY TAKE

    • @OuttheCave
      @OuttheCave 6 месяцев назад

      Oh this is the best question nobody asks! It probably took me 30h to install the pipes and pass the wires through and to my electric panel including 3 trips to the store. Then another 15h to install all the outlets, covers and lighting. Between work and family, an hour here and there, it took me a good 2 months of elapsed time to finish the project. Good thing I don't count my time ;o) Thank you for asking and Cheers!!

    I'm about to make my own pipe and needed to understand how to carve the block of wood, this is the best woodworking video ive ever seen! The plans at the beginning were extremely helpful. I have one question though as someone who has never used a pipe before, can i make the full pipe out of wood? or is there a reason people seem to buy the mouthpiece instead? I know it has a place to hold a filter, but im honestly not worried about that, im perfectly willing to deal with the harshness.

    • @OuttheCave
      @OuttheCave 9 месяцев назад

      I'm really glad this was helpful! You can certainly make a stem from wood. A lot of people use a piece of tree branch in a shape they like and split it in the middle. Then they carve out the center before re-glueing the 2 halves. I never made one of those but I always think about giving it a try for a wizard type of pipe. The longer the stem, the colder the smoke. About the filter, I'm using it mostly to absorb the condensation humidity that sometimes build into a nasty juice. When I'm out of filters I roll a piece of paper or bark in there. However, having a wood stem is actually a good way to avoid this condensation because the wood will absorbe it. Making your own pipe makes a really rewarding smoke! Cheers!

      @spitfire_saint4428 9 месяцев назад

      @@OuttheCave well I've been through a journey. Carved my pipe out of a block of ash, drilled the holes, and chiseled everything into shape, just need to sand it now. I'm really happy with how it turned out, though my rounding skills with a chisel are not good. The wood stem definitely added a bit of complexity, but that was mostly solved with a longer drill bit. It was difficult to get the holes to line up inside the joint. Making everything else was so painless, I'm really glad I found this video, thank you!

    • @OuttheCave
      @OuttheCave 9 месяцев назад

      That is good to hear!! Ash is a good wood but start it with slow smokes to build a nice cake and avoid burning it (1/4 bowl, few half bowl, few 3/4 bowl). The trick for lining up the holes (if you ever make a 2nd one) is having a square block to start with and also, once you setup the piece firmly in the drill press, you don't move it until all holes from that directions are done. And how does it smoke?? I bet it's great! Cheers!

    What kind of materials are you making out ?? Bobby s

    • @OuttheCave
      @OuttheCave 9 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your question! It's made from MDF (also called "particule board" or "fiber board" depending of the country/region) MDF is a medium density variant (MDF : Medium Density Fiber). Basically. it's fine wood dust mixed with a bonding agent, making it look like thick and heavy cardboard. It's also very easy to balance because the density is evenly distributed. It comes natural brown/beige or with a primer white paint that you can scrape off. I hope that helps. Cheers!

You can tune by moving the upper one in either direction in small increments to elliminate almost all noise. Been doin it like that for over 50yrs and it works very well.

    You took the time for conduit, then going up the wall should have been done in conduit for the protection of the wire as well! Some one already mentioned the green wire, yes it for grounds only along with bare! use two 1/2-in Zinc-plated Steel Set Screw Connector Conduit Fitting, a 3/8-in Die Cast Zinc Clamp-on Type Service Entrance Connector Conduit Fitting, and a 1/2-in Zinc-plated Steel Threaded Coupling Conduit Fitting, 1/2-in 90 Zinc-plated Steel Right Angle Type Elbow Conduit Fitting, a 1/2-in Zinc-plated Steel Set Screw Coupling Conduit Fitting to keep the same look you are doing! strip the romex for the conduit run down to the box leaving a little to start into the conduit for tightening down on it at the clamp! That way you have your conduit up to the ceiling then romex going along the board, I think you will like it that way when you see it done! You can one for each romex! This is just a idea!

    • @OuttheCave
      @OuttheCave Год назад

      Great comment/ideas! I should have used another color than green. I added some tape on all extremities to indicate it was a neutral wire but that was clearly a mistake from my part. For the romex on the wall up, those were enclosed not too long after so I didn't run conduits. Same with the ceiling romex but I still got to insulate and close that ceiling, hopefully in the spring. Thanks a lot for taking the time to put all the details! Cheers!

      @@oldcatmech Yeah, I fully get it, that green wire should have been red or black. I may re-run a red wire to all those outlets at some point. It would not take too long if I just hook in to the green to pull it in the conduit sections. Thanks for pushing me in the right direction! Cheers!

    There's a seller on Ebay, called 'Antlers by Cody', who makes pipes out of antler and horn; and, he coats the inside of his pipes with "liquid meerschaum". From what little information I've gathered so far, 'liquid meerschaum' is simply powdered meerschaum, mixed-with a binder; but, I don't yet know what that binder would be. I had wondered if clay might serve similarly.....

      Really sounds like a great concept, having a bowl of meerschaum. Thanks for bringing this up and let us know if you find out! Cheers!

    Would coating the inside of the bowl with clay or 'liquid meerschaum' make the pipe last longer?

      Hi and thanks for your great question! I have never seen a pipe with a coated bowl. I know there are corn cob pipes that are coated with clay but I think they just coat the outside. So you may have just invented something! Let us know the details if you do any tests with this idea and how it went. Cheers!

      Oh, sorry to hear that. I used kiln dried cherry and it never cracked on me. Hope you find a cool wood that works. Cheers!

    Dude! I could have carved that out with a band saw or a grinding wheel in 5 minutes. WTF?l

      Thanks for your comment! I'm fixing a bandsaw soon so I'll probably use that in a later video. A grinding wheel, not sure, this wood darkens/blackens really easily. I may give that a try. Cheers!
